Arizona Republican Party Backs President Trump's Executive Order, Defends Election Integrity in Federal Court

June 4, 2025

PHOENIX, AZ - The AZGOP filed an amicus brief in federal court supporting President Trump’s Executive Order 14248, “Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections.” This legal action reinforces Arizona’s longstanding commitment to election integrity and supports the lawful, common-sense measures outlined in the President’s directive.

The brief argues two essential points:

1. Proof of Citizenship Is Legal and Necessary: The National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) empowers the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) and individual states to require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship in voter registration. The EAC has clear statutory authority to make this a condition on the federal registration form.

2. Executive Order Aligns with Federal Law: The Executive Order’s mandate that federal agencies verify citizenship before offering voter registration forms to public benefits applicants simply enforces existing laws. It ensures that only U.S. citizens are registered to vote—nothing more, nothing less.

AZGOP Chairwoman Gina Swoboda stated, “The American people expect secure elections, not open invitations to fraud. Arizona has led the nation with proof-of-citizenship laws for two decades, and we stand firmly behind President Trump’s efforts to protect the ballot. This is about safeguarding every legal vote—and stopping those who want to dilute it.”

Background:

President Trump’s Executive Order directs the EAC to require documentary proof of citizenship on federal voter registration forms, ensures mail-in ballots are received by Election Day, and mandates cleanup of outdated voter rolls.
Left-wing groups are suing to block these measures, which would help prevent illegal voting and strengthen election security.
Arizona has a long-standing record of requiring proof of citizenship on its state voter registration forms and is uniquely positioned to highlight the constitutionality and effectiveness of such requirements.

The Arizona Republican Party will continue to lead and support efforts that uphold the rule of law, promote transparency, and ensure confidence in every election.
