AZGOP Demands Transparency from Secretary of State Following Disturbing Cybersecurity Breach

July 22, 2025

PHOENIX, AZ - In response to alarming reports of a cybersecurity breach within the office of the Arizona Secretary of State, the Arizona Republican Party and Republican National Committee are sounding the alarm and demanding immediate transparency. With critical election infrastructure potentially compromised, voters deserve answers—not silence.

In a formal public records request submitted today, the AZGOP and RNC demand full disclosure from Secretary of State Adrian Fontes’s office. The request is seeking comprehensive records and communications detailing exactly which systems were compromised, the origin and nature of the breach, the specific data exposed, and the actions taken to mitigate this severe threat.

“Arizonans deserve immediate transparency about the cybersecurity breach that could undermine confidence in our elections,” said AZGOP Chairwoman Gina Swoboda. “This is not a partisan issue-it’s an issue of trust and security. We expect swift and comprehensive cooperation from the Secretary of State’s office.”

This unsettling breach, revealed publicly on July 1st, has raised urgent questions about the security of Arizona’s electoral systems. Yet, the Secretary of State’s office has remained troublingly silent about the full scope and impact of the cyberattack, leaving Arizonans in the dark about the true extent of the risk.

According to public reports, the breach involved hackers with suspected ties to Iran who replaced candidate photos on the Secretary of State’s website with inflammatory propaganda and messages referencing revenge. The attack prompted a shutdown of the candidate portal and has drawn national concern over Arizona’s election infrastructure vulnerability.

The Arizona Republican Party and Republican National Committee have requested expedited processing, emphasizing that election security is critical to public confidence and trust. The parties have also requested a waiver of any fees, given the public’s substantial interest in the security of Arizona’s election infrastructure.
