DC Law Enforcement Continues to Pay the Price for the DC Council's 'Defund-the Police' Policies

May 20, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC – On May 20, 2024 and over the weekend, two officers of the MPD were injured in the line of duty. DC GOP Chairman Patrick Mara released the following statement.

“The past 48 hours have seen two officers escape potential life-threatening situations. On Saturday, an officer was stabbed in the neck while placing an individual in custody. Today, just hours ago, an officer on patrol in his car was shot in his head. Miraculously, both officers were only injured. We need to recognize the risk our officers take each day they wear their uniforms to work to protect us.”

He continued, “The men and women of the MPD risk their lives to keep us safe, but our Council members neglect to see the risk and sacrifice they take each day they wear their uniforms to protect us. The Council must be held accountable for its part in the fact that criminals get a free pass to get back on the street and that our MPD is woefully understaffed and severely overworked. District residents deserve safe streets without the random violence against citizens or police officers.”

The DC Republican Party is comprised of registered Republicans living throughout the District of Columbia in all eight wards who are nominated and elected to serve as members. It is a state party with three elected members of the 168-member Republican National Committee.
