Governor Patrick Morrisey Announces Back to School Sales Tax Holiday Period, Encourages West Virginians to Support Local Businesses

BRIDGEPORT, W.V. - On July 30, 2025, Governor Patrick Morrisey announced that West Virginians in need of materials for the upcoming school year will be able to save money next weekend – Friday, August 1, 2025 through Monday, August 4, 2025 –using the back-to-school Sales Tax Holiday period.

“The upcoming sales tax holiday period is a chance to put hard-earned dollars back into the pockets of West Virginians,” said Governor Morrisey. “I hope everyone gets the chance to get out, support local businesses, and get ready for the upcoming school year.”  

West Virginians will save an estimated $3.4 million over the four-day tax holiday period. Governor Morrisey encouraged families to take advantage of the savings this weekend and promoted the opportunity to support local businesses. 

The following items will be exempt from the Sales and Use Tax from Friday through Monday:

  • Certain clothing with a purchase price of $125 or less
  • Certain laptop and tablet computers with a purchase price of $500 or less
  • Certain school instruction material with a purchase price of $20 or less
  • Certain school supplies with a purchase price of $50 or less
  • Certain sports equipment with a purchase price of $150 or less
