Remembering Mike Gill

February 4, 2024

Washington, DC - It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the untimely passing of Mike Gill, a long-active member of the D.C. Republican Party, who last week was tragically gunned down by a repeat criminal while waiting to pick up his wife in downtown Washington, D.C.

Patrick Mara, Chairman of the D.C. Republican Party, stated, “We are distraught and saddened by the murder of Mike Gill. He was a friend to many and was a big part of the DC GOP for several years. You could always rely on Mike for advice and counsel in one’s personal, professional, and political life.”

Throughout his accomplished legal career, Gill was an attorney in numerous capacities.

José Cunningham, DC Republican Party National Committeeman, and former Chairman, initially befriended Mike in 2004 when they were colleagues and both joined the Crowell & Moring law firm. Cunningham noted, “Mike was a dear friend who agreed to serve as General Counsel of the DC GOP when I became Chairman. He was always the first to volunteer for difficult tasks and helped us through rough times. I was thrilled when Mayor Bowser appointed him to serve on the D.C. Board of Elections beginning in 2016.”

Gill served three terms with the D.C. Board of Elections as the Board’s sole Republican member. By all accounts, he did a fantastic job serving the city he loved. He was never afraid to take a stand when necessary, and he knew how to work across the aisle. He served in the Reagan, Bush, and Trump administrations, and work went well beyond politics and government service. He was a man of faith and ideals. He put action behind his words by doing pro-bono work for the Archdiocesan Legal Network and the Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) program, where he represented undocumented children in state and federal court.

Beyond his extensive professional accomplishments, Mike was a devoted husband and father. He leaves behind a loving wife and three children. Mike’s unwavering dedication to his family was evident in every aspect of his life. Mike’s absence leaves a void that cannot be filled. He was a friend, mentor, and inspiration to many. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched, the projects he brought to life, and the memories cherished by those who knew him.

Added Mara, “This is such a shocking loss for many of us. He had so many friends throughout numerous cross sections of Washington. Simply put, everybody loved the guy. Our thoughts remain most with Mike’s family.”
