Republican Party of Iowa State Central Committee Affirms Constitutional and Platform Stance on Use of Eminent Domain

May 22, 2025

The Republican Party of Iowa State Central Committee passed the following resolution the evening of May 21st, 2025.

Whereas, The United States and Iowa Constitutions should be interpreted as allowing eminent domain only for public use projects; and

Whereas, Item 6 in the Property section of the 2024 Iowa State Republican Platform states:

“We oppose government using eminent domain to take private property away from the owner for the use of another private party, or for-profit entity.”

Therefore, be it resolved by the State Central Committee of the Republican Party of Iowa that we urge our congressional delegation in Washington, D.C., to be mindful of the Constitutional requirements for eminent domain and the property provision of the Platform as they carry out their legislative duties.
