RI GOP Slams Providence Council: 8% Tax Hike So They Can Mail Out 'How to Evade the Law' Guides

June 27, 2025

Warwick, RI - The Republican Party of Rhode Island is calling for a full investigation into the Providence City Council’s latest stunt, using taxpayer dollars to send a “Know Your Rights” mailer that essentially instructs illegal immigrants how to skirt the law. In the same breath, the Council voted to increase taxes by 8%. You can’t make this up.

They’re not just ignoring their oath, they’re mocking it. Every member of the Council swore to uphold the Constitution and the laws of the United States and Rhode Island. But instead of protecting legal residents and respecting their duty, they spent your money to help those who entered the country illegally figure out how to avoid accountability.

It makes perfect sense… if you don’t think about it.

The optics are blinding: tax the people more, then use their hard-earned money to hand out lawbreaking instructions. Providence residents should be outraged and demand that every Council member involved refund the cost of these mailers—personally.

And let’s be real, if the Council thinks residents need a taxpayer-funded mailer to understand the Constitution, they’re only highlighting the spectacular failure of Rhode Island’s education system one they’ve helped oversee.

Chairman Joe Powers stated:

“This isn’t just political theater, it’s government malpractice. The Providence City Council used public funds to push propaganda that undermines federal law, all while gouging taxpayers. If you’re an elected official aiding lawbreakers, you don’t belong in office, you belong under investigation. Period.”

The Rhode Island Republican Party demands immediate action, accountability, and consequences for this reckless, insulting behavior. If the Council won’t defend the law or respect the taxpayers, maybe they should read the Constitution themselves—preferably without crayons.
