RPNM Statement on New Taxpayer Funded Abortion and Gender Transition Clinic in Dona Ana

September 5, 2024

LAS CRUCES, NM - On September 5, 2024, Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham posted a tweet on her X account beginning with, “It’s a beautiful morning in New Mexico,” before announcing she would be heading to Doña Ana to break ground on a new 10-million-dollar taxpayer-funded abortion clinic.

The new clinic, strategically located to attract out-of-state abortion tourism to New Mexico, will offer late-term surgical abortions and gender transition procedures. This clinic, coupled with a 2023 law that prevented parental notification for a minor’s abortion or transgender procedures, raises significant concerns about bringing this clinic into the community.

Democratic Representative Gabe Vasquez, who represents the district where the new abortion clinic is located, was present at the groundbreaking ceremony.

The Republican Party of New Mexico Spokeswoman Ash Soular issued the following statement:

“New Mexicans are suffering from failed Democratic policies that have made groceries unaffordable, increased violent crime, and left our children with the worst education in the nation. Instead of addressing these pressing issues, Democrats opened a new 10-million-dollar taxpayer-funded abortion and gender transition clinic to attract out-of-state patients.

“The Democratic Party of New Mexico’s promotion of late-term abortion is nothing short of extreme. In 2021 Democrats passed a law allowing abortion up to birth in New Mexico and in 2023, Democrats in the legislature voted against parental notification if a child seeks abortion or gender transition procedures.

“The misplaced priorities by Democrats are perfectly summed up by Democratic Rep. Gabe Vasquez claiming to champion women by celebrating the opening of the new taxpayer-funded late-term abortion clinic while effectively enabling child and women sex trafficking to take hold in our state by voting multiple times not to shut down the border.

“It’s time for a new direction in New Mexico. Republicans will continue to fight to protect women and children and build a solid foundation for them to be successful through pro-family policies. If you do not align with the Democratic Party’s main economic development plan which is abortion and gender transition tourism, vote for Republicans who will prioritize common sense leadership.”
