Sabrina Berry Announces Departure From Democratic Party

Berry, a former Democratic candidate for N.C. House, previously served as the N.C. Democratic Party's 6th District Chair

Sabrina Berry, a Cabarrus County community leader and former Democratic official, announced her decision to leave the Democratic Party and join the Republican Party on Thursday, June 5. Berry, who has held leadership roles including 6th Congressional District Leader, stated that her choice was motivated by principle rather than political ambition.

“I didn’t leave the people, left a party and a platform that no longer aligned with my values,” Berry said.

Berry cited a defining moment during a Cabarrus County public meeting, where Democrat and Cabarrus School Board Member Pam Escobar questioned the role of faith in public life. “That was my wake-up call,” Berry explained. “Not just because of what was said, but because of the lack of accountability afterward. I will not compromise the faith that guides my life and leadership.”

“In the Democratic Party, I found that certain convictions had to be set aside. I could advocate for justice, but not on the foundation of my beliefs. I could speak on issues, but not from the perspective of my faith. Ultimately, I had to choose, and I chose to stand by my principles.”

Berry emphasized that while her party affiliation has changed, her commitment to service remains unchanged.

“I’m still here for the single mother working to provide for her family. Still here for the hardworking citizens who feel overlooked. Still here for our youth, our seniors, and the future of our community. I will continue fighting for what is right, now with the freedom to do so without reservation.”

Addul Ali, a longtime friend who serves the GOP as the 12th Congressional District Republican Party Chairman, lauded the move saying, “The Democrat Party has long taken advantage of Black Americans and Sabrina is sending a message that our faith is a vital part of who we are and a party that denies that doesn’t deserve our membership, support or votes.”

She concluded with a message to others who may feel politically adrift due to their convictions:

“This decision isn’t just about party-it’s about staying true to what matters most. You don’t have to sacrifice your faith to make a difference. Leadership requires courage, compassion, and conviction. That’s the path that I’ve chosen, and I will always prioritize my principles and my faith in public service.”
