MADISON, WI - Once upon a time, Tammy Baldwin believed that politicians should be honest and forthright with their constituents. Unfortunately, those days are long gone.
Throughout this campaign, Senator Baldwin and her team have ignored concerns regarding the conflict of interest involving her partner’s work on behalf of major corporations and wealthy individuals on Wall Street. Considering it is one of her responsibilities as a United States Senator to oversee and regulate said industries, it is more than reasonable for voters to expect transparency from her when it comes to her and her partner’s financial assets and clients.
If only the Tammy Baldwin of today would listen to Tammy Baldwin from fifteen years ago.
During a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing in 2009, then-Congresswoman Baldwin called for lawmakers to be completely transparent with the public about their finances. “Married members must file very important information about their spouses’ income, their investments, gifts and debts, et cetera,” said Baldwin. “Surely, the public interest would require that these obligations apply also to partners of gay and lesbian officeholders.”
From CNN:
Flash forward fifteen years, Baldwin is now hoping she can straw man her way out of disclosing any potential conflict of interest between her partner’s assets and financial dealings and her own responsibilities as a senator in Washington.
“The real question that matters is whether Tammy Baldwin and her partner have enriched themselves in an unethical manner by exploiting legal loopholes and technicalities. This issue is on the minds of voters, and she owes them an answer.” - WisGOP Chairman Brian Schimming
