CAGOP Chairwoman Corrin Rankin Calls Newsom's Request for Billions in Medi-Cal Bailout Funds Reckless

March 18, 2025

“Governor Newsom’s reckless policies have once again left California taxpayers on the hook for billions in bailout funds”

SACRAMENTO - California Republican Party (@CAGOP) Chair Corrin Rankin (@CorrinRankin) issued a statement today following Governor Gavin Newsom’s acknowledgment that the state’s Medi-Cal program requires an emergency infusion of $3.4 billion and additional loans of $2.8 billion to remain solvent.

The financial crisis follows Newsom’s controversial expansion of Medi-Cal benefits to include undocumented immigrants, a move Republicans warned would burden the system and taxpayers alike.

“Governor Newsom’s reckless policies have once again left California taxpayers on the hook for billions in bailout funds,” Rankin said. “This is exactly what happens when Democrats prioritize unsustainable policies over fiscal responsibility. Instead of ensuring Medi-Cal serves California’s most vulnerable legal residents, Newsom has chosen to expand benefits to illegal immigrants with no regard for the financial consequences.”

Newsom defended his decision, stating his belief in “universal healthcare” as a core principle, saying that rolling back coverage for undocumented immigrants is “not on my docket.”

“The Governor’s so-called ‘core principles’ are nothing more than failed socialist experiments that drive California deeper into debt,” Rankin said. “Our state deserves real solutions that protect taxpayers, strengthen our economy, and ensure that those who have paid into the system receive the care they deserve. Newsom’s refusal to consider a course correction shows how out of touch he is with Californians who are struggling to afford healthcare themselves.”

With the Governor now scrambling for billions in emergency funding, the CAGOP is calling for accountability and demanding a reversal of policies that have drained state resources.

“The people of California deserve better than a Governor who treats their hard-earned money as an endless slush fund for his agenda,” Rankin said. “We will continue to fight for fiscal sanity, government accountability, and policies that put Californians first.”
