Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Andy Harris M.D. (MD-01) Chairman of the Agriculture, Food and Drug Administration, Rural Development, and Related Agencies Subcommittee on Appropriations, wrote a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency on behalf of his constituents addressing concerns that the Lafarge Quarry in Baltimore County, Maryland has recently been approved for a water and sewage extension despite the quarry still being considered an active mine by State of Maryland regulations.
It has been brought to our office’s attention that this 400-acre site received approval for the extension of public water and sewerage in October. We have also been told that the next step is either approval of a Planned Unit Development or zoning changes in 2024.
Congressman Harris Statement: “Many constituents have reached out to me to voice their concerns that Baltimore County is looking at potential development of the Lafarge Quarry, including possible residential units, commercial properties, a trade school, and/or distribution warehouses—despite concerns that the property could be contaminated. It is imperative to ensure the safety of all residents, that is why I am calling on the EPA to review the proposed development plan and conduct immediate testing of the Lafarge Quarry in close coordination with the state of Maryland and Baltimore County.”
