On Final Day Tax Season, Congressman Harris Urges Senate to Pass Bill Defunding Joe Biden's Army of 87,000 IRS Agents

April 18, 2023

Washington, D.C. – Today, as millions of Americans file their taxes on this last day of tax season, Congressman Andy Harris (MD-01) released the following statement highlighting the increase in taxes millions of poor and middle-class Americans will pay due to Joe Biden’s reckless spending, historic inflation, and bad economy. Congressman Harris also urged the Senate to pass the House of Representative’s Republican led Bill that permanently defunds Joe Biden’s army of 87,000 IRS agents.

Last year, the nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation estimated that as a result of the misnamed Inflation Reduction Act, nearly every tax bracket would pay more in taxes with those making below $10,000 seeing the largest increase. Today, we see that coming to pass as millions of American taxpayers see less value in their tax refunds due to inflation caused by the Biden Administration’s increased and reckless spending.

The Inflation Reduction Act also significantly expanded the budget for the Internal Revenue Service, providing nearly 80 billion in funding

for 87,000 new IRS agents. Early this year, as the first piece of legislation passed in the new majority, Republicans defunded this measure and sent it to the Senate.

Congressman Harris Statement: “As tax season concludes today, it is important to remember that millions of hard-working American families are paying nearly $371 more per month on expenses due to historic inflation and poor economic policy. With inflation remaining at historic levels, the last thing any hard-working American taxpayer needs is harassment from thousands of additional IRS agents. We don’t need more attacks on the middle class, we need more common sense and fiscal responsibility and on this final day of tax season, I urge the Senate to permanently defund Joe Biden’s army of 87,000 IRS agents.”
