Governor Gianforte Honors Hi-Line Veterans

FORT PECK, MT -  Governor Greg Gianforte this week recognized four Montana veterans with the 2024 Montana Governor’s Veteran Commendation during ceremonies held in Chouteau, Hill, and Valley counties.

“Montana veterans don’t just serve in uniform, they serve for life,” Gov. Gianforte said. “These four veterans have answered the call again and again, showing up for their neighbors, strengthening their communities, and reminding us all what service truly means.” 

The Montana Governor’s Veteran Commendation recognizes veterans who have selflessly served in uniform and made positive impacts in their communities. Since 2021, more than 170 veterans have received the honor from Governor Gianforte.

During a visit to Fort Benton, the governor recognized Officer William Paris, a U.S. Army veteran whose lifetime of service continues to shape the Fort Benton community.

A leader in both the Lions Club and American Legion, Paris is known for delivering Meals on Wheels, helping homebound neighbors, and supporting fellow veterans. Through his involvement with youth and patriotic events, he’s helped teach students the importance of American traditions and honors veterans during parades and memorials.

Later that day in Havre, the governor honored Major Dale Herd, a highly decorated U.S. Army veteran whose commendations include the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, and the Combat Medical Badge.

After his military service, Herd became a pillar of veteran support in the Hi-Line. As Quartermaster of VFW Post 497, he has organized holiday ceremonies and helped bring the 2025 state VFW convention to Havre. He also played a vital role in developing the Havre Veterans Memorial Park and continues to serve with the Elks to support and recognize Montana’s veterans.

During his visit to Valley County, the governor presented commendations to two veterans during a ceremony held at the Northeast Montana Veterans Memorial in Fort Peck.

Sergeant Virgil Nelson of Opheim, a Vietnam veteran and recipient of the National Defense Service Medal and the Expert Badge with the M-14, was recognized for his commitment to neighbors and community. Whether cleaning up tornado damage, helping fight fires, sharing his knowledge and leadership on several boards, cooking for town picnics, or calling the auction at the local rodeo, Nelson is known across the region as someone who always shows up, quietly and selflessly, to lend a hand.

Chief Master Sergeant Arthur (Art) Widhalm of Glasgow, a U.S. Air Force veteran, was honored for decades of service to his country and fellow veterans. His military decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, and Air Medal.

In the years since his service, Widhalm has held key leadership roles within the VFW locally, statewide, and nationally. He’s a founding member and chairman of the Northeast Montana Veterans Memorial and has helped countless veterans. For the past twenty years, he’s also sent homemade jerky to troops serving overseas.

“Each of these men reflects what makes Montana great, selfless service, deep humility, and a lifelong commitment to others,” the governor said.

Each recipient received a Montana state flag flown over the Capitol in their honor and a letter from the governor recognizing their service.
