How Much Does It Cost To Run For Governor In Kansas?

July 24, 2025

Running for governor isn’t for the faint of heart or the underfunded. It takes stamina, strategy, staff, travel, door-knocking, message discipline, and the ability to lead a team through nonstop demands. The price tag is steep. The pressure is real.

That’s why the Kansas GOP plays a critical role.

We don’t pick candidates, but we do fight to keep Kansas competitive. We build the voter file, train volunteers, support grassroots organizing, get out the vote, and keep Democrats on defense every step of the way.

If we want to win in 2026, we have to start preparing now.

Infrastructure, data, communications, and turnout—none of it happens without your help.

Support the KSGOP today and don’t forget to chip in to your favorite candidate in the primary. Let’s make sure our side is ready, no matter which Republican is on the general election ballot.

The reality of political campaigning, especially for a statewide office, is that a person with good ideas is not enough. To win, candidates must have deep grassroots support and the financial backing necessary to get their message to voters.

While door-knocking is an incredible tool that can make a difference in the race, a statewide campaign based solely on doors would require enormous cost and time. We know it takes approximately 500,000 votes to win a governor’s race in Kansas. If a candidate spent 2-minutes per door with no breaks for 8-hours a day, it would take 2,083 days to knock 500,000 doors — that’s more than 5 years!

And that doesn’t include the cost of hotels and gas. In the 2022 gubernatorial race, Laura Kelly spent $7.7 million, or $15 per vote. Derek Schmidt spent $4 million, or $8 per vote!!

We urge all grassroots activists to consider donating to the Kansas GOP and to your favorite Republican candidates. Small dollars add up and your contributions will make a critical impact on our shared efforts to elect good Republicans up and down the ballot.
