ICYMI: Robeson County Commissioners Switch to GOP!

May 5, 2025

The North Carolina Republican Party continues to grow and Democrats continue to shrink.

In Robeson County, 2 elected County Commissioners announced they were joining the GOP and leaving the Democrat Party behind.

In The Robesonian:

County Commissioners Lance Herndon and Judy Sampson have switched political party affiliations.

Herndon, a second-generation county commissioner and farmer, said he broke his alliance with the Democratic party because there is no “conservative faction left in the Democratic Party.”

“My ideology hasn’t changed,” Herndon said. “I’m still the same guy I’ve always been and I hope to represent Robeson County as I always have.”

Herndon serves as vice chairman of the Robeson County Commissioners and represents District 8. He has served on the County Commission since 2009.

Judy Sampson, a past Pembroke Chamber of Commerce president, represents District 5 and has served on the county commission since 2020.

The balance of power on the Robeson Copunty Commission now shifts to five Republicans and three Democrats.

“The momentum of the Republican Party continues in Robeson County and the Sandhills.” said NCGOP Chairman Jason Simmons. “The values of North Carolina communities are aligned with an America First and Family First agenda. We welcome them to our party and in their efforts to continue making North Carolina the best state to live, work, and retire.”
