MassGOP Condemns Governor Healey's Plan to Drain Pandemic Funds for Migrant Crisis, Warns of Budget Cuts to Critical Services

August 12, 2024

Boston, MA - Governor Healey has indicated that she is looking to access the remaining pandemic-era surplus dollars to cover shelter costs. This is after the Democratic supermajority has approved $500 million towards the state-run shelter program in fiscal year 2025. Despite the fact that taxpayers have already spent $1 billion and expect to spend more than $1 billion in each of the next several fiscal years. Speaker Mariano has signaled that he is considering broad based budget cuts for fiscal year 2026 to further fund the migrant crisis.

MassGOP Chair, Amy Carnevale, provided comment stating, “Massachusetts risks cuts to crucial government programs to further fund and enable this migrant crisis. Democrats have proven that they are willing to cut funding towards schools, senior services, MassHealth, and first responders before they’re willing to take steps to curb the migrant crisis and stop incentivizing migrants entering the Commonwealth. Democrats seem willing to bankrupt Massachusetts before addressing this crisis head on.”
