McConnell Secures Nearly $9 Million for Blue Grass Airport

April 25, 2023

The funding comes from the FY23 Airport Improvement Program, which Senator McConnell supported in this year’s government funding bill.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced today the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will provide $8,939,382 through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) to fund infrastructure projects at the Blue Grass Airport (LEX) in Lexington, Kentucky.

Today’s grant will help fund multiple investments to improve the safety of flyers and airport workers at Blue Grass Airport.

Senator McConnell advocated for AIP funding in this year’s government funding bill, which he helped craft as a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. The bill passed the Senate and became law at the end of last year. The Senator also sent a letter to the Secretary of Transportation in support of this funding.

“Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport is an important driver of economic growth in Central Kentucky, connecting our nation’s supply chain while also serving thousands of passengers each day. I was proud to leverage my leadership position in the Senate to advocate for this federal funding,” said Senator McConnell. “As demand for air travel rebounds throughout the nation, I’m pleased to see LEX dedicate these funds to improving the safety and convenience of our Commonwealth’s many travelers.”

“This funding is welcome news for the Central Kentucky community. This grant will allow us to complete the final phase of an effort over the past several years to maximize the utility of our primary commercial service runway while at the same time adding an extra measure of safety for the traveling public.  We are grateful for Senator McConnell’s advocacy in Washington to bring this funding home to Lexington,” said Eric Frankl, President and CEO of Blue Grass Airport.
