NM Governor Is NOT The Commander In Chief

June 9, 2025

In response to a joint statement issued by the Democratic Governors Association, which Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham endorsed, Republican Party of New Mexico Chairwoman Amy Barela issued the following statement:

NEW MEXICO - “It is both reckless and irresponsible for Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham to align herself with a message that undermines the safety and security of our communities. By condemning efforts by the President to restore law and order in the face of violence, the Governor is once again choosing political optics over public safety.

Let’s be clear - we do not condone violence, regardless of the cause or the city. Rioting, destruction of property, and attacks on law enforcement are not acts of protest - they are criminal acts. The Governor’s participation in a statement that fails to distinguish between peaceful protest and violent anarchy is dangerous and divisive.

Inciting violence, even indirectly, must stop immediately. New Mexico families deserve leaders who will come to the table with real solutions — not pour gasoline on the fire in an attempt to score political points. Once again, Michelle Lujan Grisham has failed to put the people of New Mexico first.

The Republican Party of New Mexico stands firmly with law enforcement, with the rule of law, and with every citizen who chooses to make their voice heard peacefully and respectfully.  This is just another reminder that it’s time for a Republican Governor in New Mexico.”

Amy Barela
Chairwoman, Republican Party of New Mexico
