Providence City Council Chooses Terrorist Symbolism Over Unity - A Slap In The Face to RI's Jewish Community

May 15, 2025

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Providence City Council’s decision to host a Palestinian flag-raising at City Hall on Friday, May 16th, is nothing short of disgraceful. At a time when Hamas-an internationally recognized terrorist organization—continues to murder civilians and hold hostages, the Council’s actions are a direct insult to Rhode Island’s Jewish community and to all who stand against terrorism.

“This is a slap in the face to the amazing, vibrant Jewish community that calls Providence home,” said Chairman Joe Powers. “Flying a flag associated with a government run by Hamas is not a call for peace-it’s an endorsement of terror. The Council should be ashamed.”

What’s worse: this action is against the law. Rhode Island General Law § 30-7-1 makes clear that the only flags permitted on public property are those of the United States, the State of Rhode Island, and allied nations recognized by the U.S. government. The Palestinian Authority, governed by Hamas, a recognized terrorist group, does not meet that standard, unless you’re a Democrat. By raising this flag, the Providence City Council is not just being reckless—they are breaking the law and must be held accountable.

While the Council grandstands with illegal, divisive gestures, the city is falling apart. “Student literacy rates are in crisis-our kids can’t read at grade level, roads and bridges are literally collapsing. taxes are through the roof, driving families and businesses out of Providence.”Powers continued,“And yet, the Council chooses to focus on international political theater instead of the basic responsibilities of local government.”

“The City Council is more interested in performative politics than doing its job,” Powers continued. “The streets aren’t safe, the schools are failing, and instead of fixing those problems, they’re busy waving flags for terrorists. It’s not just shameful-it’s illegal.”

The Republican Party of Rhode Island stands firmly with our Jewish neighbors and all Rhode Islanders who expect their government to follow the law, serve the people, and focus on solving real problems. We call on elected officials at every level to condemn this dangerous stunt and demand accountability from those who put ideology above integrity.
