Republican Party of Minnesota Files Brief and Proudly Defends Election Integrity-From Hennepin County Wins to Stopping Walz's Illegal Special Election

June 12, 2025

Chair Alex Plechash: “We always stand up for fair elections in Minnesota.”

Saint Paul, MN - On June 12, 2025, the Minnesota Republican Party, led by Chair Alex Plechash, filed a critical brief in Minnesota Alliance for Retired Americans v. Simon, opposing left-wing efforts to dismantle Minnesota’s proven absentee ballot witness requirement. This latest action continues a robust record of successful challenges to protect electoral integrity across the state-from the U.S. Supreme Court siding with the GOP on Hennepin County’s absentee ballot board to halting Governor Walz’s illegal attempt to call a premature special election.

Previously, the Minnesota Supreme Court sided with the Minnesota GOP, ruling that Hennepin County improperly bypassed the party’s list when appointing election judges to its absentee ballot board-a landmark victory for transparent, bipartisan oversight

Additionally, when Governor Tim Walz attempted to issue an unlawful writ calling for a January 28 special election in House District 40B-ignoring statutory timelines-the Minnesota GOP aggressively sued. The state Supreme Court struck down the writ, affirming that Plechash’s party will not stand by when procedural rules are cast aside

Chair Alex Plechash issued the following statement:

“Minnesotans deserve elections conducted with integrity-and we’ve proven we will fight for it. From correcting election judge selection in Hennepin County to stopping Governor Walz’s attempt to rig special election law, we’ve shown we don’t back down.”

“Now we’ve filed in the Supreme Court defending our state’s bipartisan absentee ballot rules. The Legislature even broadened the law to allow any adult citizen to serve as a ballot witness-making this lawsuit nothing more than a cynical attempt to sow chaos.”

“Rest assured-we are unwavering. Whenever election rules are abused or ignored, we stand up. We stood up in Hennepin County. We stopped Walz’s early election gambit. And now, we’ll defend common?sense absentee safeguards.”

The Minnesota GOP remains committed to monitoring this case and will respond forcefully to any threats against fair and secure voting across Minnesota.
