Former Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris has released a memoir detailing her fleeting 2024 bid for the Oval Office, entitled 107 Days, and the reaction from within her own party may signal the end of her political career. Evidently no longer concerned with masking trade secrets and dirty details, the former Vice President seems not to care what the fallout may be and is thoroughly enjoying a brief return to the political spotlight.
The title refers to the short-lived stint Harris spent on the Presidential campaign trail, just 107 days during which she believed she might ascend to the highest seat in the land following Biden’s withdrawal from the contest. Each day receives its own ‘chapter’- with seriousness ranging from which diner the campaign stopped at to discussions of Joe Biden’s mental fitness. Harris blames the President for failing to exit the race sooner- and suggests that a longer runway may have been enough to make the difference between winning and losing.
The book uncovered several inconvenient surprises, including Harris’ initial reluctance to select Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. The former Vice President revealed that she instead had two personal front runners- Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, and the previous Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Harris revealed that the former had expectations and motivations beyond the scope of the Vice Presidency, and that the latter had been overlooked because he is gay. As a top contender for 2028’s democratic nomination, Buttigieg is none too pleased with her assertion that he may not be straight enough to be taken seriously in national politics, and denied that Harris had shared such concerns with him during the vetting process as she had indicated in the book.
One moment Harris highlights as devastating to her chances of success was a now-infamous appearance on TV’s ‘The View,’ during which she was asked what she would have done differently than her boss, President Biden. Her reply, “There is not a thing that comes to mind,” became a key attack slogan for the Trump Team, suggesting her administration would bring nothing beyond four more years of inflation and international tension. She wrote of the moment, “I just pulled the pin on a hand grenade.”
Despite the book’s initial success- it sold 350,000 copies the first week- the Lady Harris herself finds her popularity rate plummeting- lower even than when she was actively participating in the running of our nation. In April 2025, 28% of Democratic voters felt energized by the idea of a second run for Kamala. Today, that number stands at a dismal 9%. She seems to have particularly lost ground among Independent and California voters- her home state, where she has previously been able to handily win elections. Both blocs’ disinterest could be the beginning of the end of her truncated career.
The book was ghostwritten by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Geraldine Brooks, and is the fourth put out by the former Vice President.
Could Kamala Harris have won the 2024 election under different circumstances? Would Joe Biden have been able to defeat Donald Trump had his health not declined?
