22-Minute Stephanopoulos Interview Fails To Ease Concerns Despite Walz’s Reassurance

July 5, 2024

Minneapolis, MN - Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman David Hann released the following statement after Joe Biden’s 22-minute interview with George Stephanopoulos aired tonight and failed to ease voters’ concerns about Biden’s candidacy:

“It was painful to watch the President attempt to convince the public to disregard the obvious. Voters know he is not competent; Democrats know he is not capable of being President. Governor Tim Walz would have done great service to the public if he had told President Biden the truth, not what he wanted to hear.”

Two days ago, Governor Walz met with Biden at the White House and publicly stated that he believes Biden is “fit for office.” After Biden’s interview tonight, voters can see clearly that Walz is not being honest with them and that Biden’s poor debate performance was more than just “a bad get,” as Walz claims, but rather a pattern of what seems to be serious health issues.

Since Walz’s Wednesday meeting, more voices have contradicted Walz’s comments by asking Biden to exit the race. Just today, U.S. Senator Mark Warner (D-Va.) has organized a group of Senate Democrats to ask Biden to step down on Monday, and U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (D-Il.) also publicly said that Biden should step aside and “let someone else do this.” ABC News also shared in their post-interview coverage that House Democrats were organizing a Zoom meeting for Sunday to discuss concerns further.

“Governor Walz’s endorsement of Biden clearly prioritizes Walz’s political future over the well-being of our democracy,” said Chairman Hann. “It’s beyond disappointing to see him protect Biden’s crumbling administration instead of being honest about the President’s diminishing capacity and advocating for the needs of the American people.”
