RPNM Statement on Kamala Harris Becoming the Official Democratic Presidential Candidate

August 2, 2024

ALBUQUERQUE - On August 2, 2024, it was announced that Kamala Harris has officially secured enough delegates to become the Democratic nominee for President through the Democratic National Convention’s virtual roll call.

President Biden won the presidential primary in New Mexico, but he stepped down a little over 100 days before the general election after receiving pressured calls to bow out from some leading Democrats, including Senator Martin Heinrich and Representative Gabe Vasquez.

Without time or procedure for another primary vote, the choice for who would replace Biden was left with delegates and party insiders.

Kamala Harris dropped out of the presidential race in 2019 when polls showed she only had 3.4 percent support nationally and could only acquire 5% support among Black voters.

The Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce issued the following statement:

“The Democratic Party of New Mexico is supporting a presidential candidate who was selected by party insiders, not elected by New Mexico voters. So much for ‘democracy.’”
